Illegal Mining Hurts Tin

A police crackdown on illegal tin mining in Indonesia, including in Bangka-Belitung islands, has cut ore supplies. Analysts maintain the current crack down may not be as severe as the one in 2006, which halted tin production at small smelters for months, mainly because the government has tightened tin export rules. Moreover, PT Timah Tbk and PT Koba Tin, a unit of Malaysian Smelting Corp, were not affected by the crackdown.

Unlike most of the other base metals, there is no growing tin surplus. Inventories held at the London Metal Exchange now sit at 8,820 tonnes, against a 52-week high of 11,430 tonnes. The potential is that a rebound in Chinese demand, coupled with the closing of mines in Indonesia, could trigger supply shortages.

Gippsland tweaks feasibility study for Abu Dabbab

Gippsland Ltd said the feasibility study for the Abu Dabbab tantalum project in Egypt has raised the capital expenditure estimate by US$48 million from the previous November 2007 forecast to US$173 million. For full story, click here
